Formerly known as the private-run Jinghua Hope School, the No. 1 New Civic School in Chaoyang District provides education to the children of the migrant workers in Beijing. In its early days, the school was poorly-equipped and lacked teachers. The school rented shabby village houses as classrooms and had no decent desks and chairs. Most of the desks were made up of simple woods, and the Education Bureau had repeatedly order the school to stop teaching in dangerous houses. In August 2007 when the Sofitel Wanda Beijing began operating, Dalian Wanda Group donated 300,000 yuan to the school through a charity institution in Chaoyang District. The donation was mainly used to renew the desks and chairs, install facilities for basketball, volleyball and table tennis, and construct the computer room, music room and library. As a result, the school’s conditions were greatly improved. In addition, the Sofitel Wanda Beijing also took the Jinghua Hope School as its volunteer base for employee education. In 2008, the hotel organized its employees to whitewash the school buildings.
